The MCA Choice Award is given each year to a project that has been completed as a result of resourceful blending of construction techniques and professionals. On January 31, 2018, JE Dunn Construction was recognized as the 2018 MCA Choice Award Recipient for the project.

On March 2, 2018, MCA Members and guests are invited to join us for a tour by members of the project team, followed by networking at Patrick McGovern’s Pub. If you can’t make the program, please still join us for the networking afterwards (if you are attending just the networking, no registration is required). Parking information for the Capitol can be found here (https://mn.gov/admin/citizen/buildings-grounds/parking/).

The State Capitol building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of Minnesota’s most famous landmarks. A comprehensive $275M restoration of both the interior and exterior of the Capitol was completed by JE Dunn Construction from 2013-2017 to address the needs of restoration, life safety, accessibility, asset preservation and long-term functionality. Key design features of the project include reclaiming public spaces, raised ceiling heights, restoration of the vast decorative painting and fine art murals, new skylights/lay lights, historical furniture restoration and new historically-appropriate elevators. The work also includes a complete overhaul of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

The exterior work includes comprehensive exterior stone restoration, window replacement, and new roofing systems. The ornate stone work required several master carvers on site for several years. Unique aspects of the work involve finely-detailed copper roof detailing, and restoration of the gold leaf gilded elements such as the dome lantern finial and the famously large “Prosperity Charioteer” that sits above the main entry. The Capitol plazas and grand stairs were all waterproofed and replaced. Work also includes a new main plaza gathering space, bus drop off areas and site security measures.

This event is complimentary for 2018 Awards Gala Attendees (registration is required) and costs $15 for all other individuals.
